Kaohsiung Taiwan has a very developed mass transit system. On this trip we set out to explore the Formosa Boulevard Station which has been dubbed “The Most Beautiful Station”.
It is at the intersection of the Red Line and Orange Line, but to my surprise this is not the Central Station. Kaohsiung Main Station is where the Train and the Metro meet.
The attraction that everyone comes to see it The Dome of Light. It looks like a mosaic or stained glass in a dome roof depicting a strange moral of nature meets cosmos and fantasy. The experience is incredible because as you change angles it feels like you’re walking through a dream or even the makings of a nightmare.
The mood is set by an array of musicians playing a grand piano set off the the side of the dome. The people who play are complete volunteers that sign up for 1 hour blocks to showcase their talent or just get some practice in. Every person that plays that piano must register before they can touch it, that’s how I’m guessing they keep it in such good condition.
When you surface, you can see no remanence of the dome below so the light that illuminates the dome is artificial but that also means its lit even at night.
When your done dome gazing, you can head over to the Liuho Night Market where they shut down the entire street to allow for vendors to set up on the road. There is a ton of food available and really cheap too. 3 courses of seafood mixed dishes cost $7.20 USD for 2 people. Which is funny because we went to a cafe for ice cream and ended up paying around $15 USD. Lesson: Street food is cheap, so don’t go to cafes.
We’ve noticed in Asia, night market and shopping is more popular since the daytime is just too hot. If you try to get anything done before 10 am goodluck, everything is still closed, but wait till the sun goes down and the streets come alive.
